From 904 Auto to 833 4-speed

Just as the 340 engine, our final transmission starts with the purchase of a parts car - this time for $400 (2003). With the diffeculty and expense of finding all the parts to do a 4speed swap, especially the '66 4 speed center console, the best option was to find a donor 4speed car. Well as they say, 'good thing comes to those who wait' - we were lucky enough to come across a wrecked 66 b'cuda with a complete 4 speed, including the much desired 4speed console. We have to thank the EVBC member Bran F for posting this info. For pictures of the car click here.

First order of business was to install the 4-speed hump from the donor car. Click here for more pictures of this project.

The clutch was upgraded to a 10.5" Centerforce - along with the larger SB bellhousing. At first we got a modified z-bar to fit with the 10.5" bellhousing, but as it turns out, this didn't work too well with the Doug Thorley headers. Our backup plan was to upgrade to a hydraulic clutch and get rid of the clutch fork and z-bar all-together.

And lastly, what better way to round out a tranny than a great shifter - and what better style of shifter to use than the classic Hurst pistol grip. The goal was to retain the 4-speed console obtain from the donar car. A 71 - 74 B-body non-console pistol grib was purchased. Once we got the shifter installed, it was obvious that in its current state, it wouldn't work with the console top. With a bit of measuring and Autocad work, we got a bracket made that did the trick. As far as I have seen so far, this is the only 66 b'cuda with both a pistol grip and console installed. Click on the picture below for some more pictures of the bracket and shifter installed.
